Georgia DOT is taking public input on a plan to widen SR 21 from south of Cook Street in Chatham County to north of McCall Road in Effingham County. The proposal would rebuild the corridor as a six-lane, median-divided highway with intersection improvements. The state lists right-of-way work in 2027 and construction in 2029, with a current construction estimate of about $99.2 million.

Why it matters

The project targets capacity and safety on one of the region’s main north-south commuter and freight corridors.

Talmadge Bridge program reaches 4.39%

Georgia DOT’s current project dashboard now lists the overall Talmadge Memorial Bridge maintenance project at 4.39 percent complete. That is a later official status for the same project and pointer already verified on September 30; GDOT’s project page still separates the overall program from the cable-replacement work package, whose field work was expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
