Savannah maps a mixed-use future for the closed mall

A new city-backed study would replace the Southside mall’s superblocks and parking fields with a walkable mix of homes, shops and public space.

Savannah has released a new Urban Land Institute study for the closed Savannah Mall and the surrounding Southside. It recommends breaking up the auto-oriented site with smaller blocks, housing, shops, public space and better walking and transit connections. The work builds on a 2018 retrofit plan; it is a redevelopment framework, not an approved construction project.

Why it matters

The city now has a current framework for turning its largest dead mall into a Southside center rather than another isolated retail box.
